Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy

At Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy we know that parenting can be rewarding, joyous and exciting. It can also be scary, trying and frustrating. This is especially true when your child is struggling and you’re not sure what to do. It brings up all kinds of questions and insecurities.

Sometimes we can’t do it alone and we need help and guidance.

You may have heard the saying “children don’t come with instruction manuals”. Truth be told, if a manual did exist, it probably wouldn’t be much help as every child is different.  So, what do you do when you have tried everything you know, but it’s just not working?

This is when Transformations Counseling Group Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy can help.

Transformations Counseling Group Child & Family Institute counseling therapy was started because often times, entire families need support while trying to communicate, learn, and create boundaries.

“It takes a village to raise a child.”

Because we focus on children and families, our therapists stay up to date with the most current research and information. They not only use their own knowledge and experience but also consult with each other, using a team approach to get the best possible options for each family’s individual situation.

Do you ask yourself...

  • Why are they behaving like this?
  • What should I do to make them stop/start doing something?
  • Do they need medication?
  • Am I a bad parent/are we bad parents?
  • How can I help my child?
  • What should I be doing at home?
  • Will they always be like this? (sad, angry, defiant, etc.)
  • What do I say to them when we are at home?
  • Won’t this just pass?
  • Do other parents get this frustrated?
  • How do I manage my emotions?
  • What do I do if they are hurting themselves?

Can you help my child?

At Transformations Counseling Group Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy we believe you are doing the best you can. Often time what we know isn’t enough. We understand you’re scared, maybe even feeling shame. There is NO shame in reaching out for help.

How Does Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy Work?

Kids learn by doing. In session with younger kids, the whole family is involved, drawing, playing, and talking. Therapists praise and support kids as they learn. They help kids believe in themselves and find their inner strengths. Therapy helps build positive thinking patterns and make healthy behavioral choices.

A therapist can meet with the child and parent or the child alone depending on the child’s age and based on what the therapist feels is best. The therapist will most likely meet with the parent(s) to give tips, ideas for how to help their child at home and make recommendations.

What Happens in Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy?

The therapist will meet with you and your child to talk. Through asking questions and listening, the therapist will learn more about your child and the problem. The therapist will tell you how they can help and begin to form a treatment plan.

After those first sessions, your child will continue to go to more therapy visits. During these visits, your child may:

  • Talk. Talking is a healthy way to express feelings. When kids put feelings into words instead of actions, they can perform their best. When someone listens and knows how they feel, kids are more ready to learn.
  • Do activities. Therapists use activities to teach about feelings and coping skills. They may have kids draw or play as a way to learn. They may teach mindfulness and calm breathing as a way to lower stress.
  • Practice new skills. Therapists help kids practice what they learn. They might play games where kids need to wait their turn, use self-control, be patient, follow directions, listen, share, try again, or deal with losing.
  • Solve problems. When working with older kids and teens, therapists ask how problems affect them at home and/or at school. They talk over how to solve these problems.

How Can Parents Help?

There are things you can do as a parent to help your child get the most from therapy:

  • Find a therapist you and your child feels comfortable with. Your child’s health care team can help you find someone.
  • Take your child to all the appointments. Change takes time and consistency. It takes many therapy visits for your child to learn new skills and keep them up.
  • Meet with your child’s therapist. Ask what to do when your child shows problems at home. Ask how to help your child do well.
  • Spend time with your child. Play, cook, read, or laugh together. Do this every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
  • Parent with patience and warmth. Use kind words, even when you need to correct your child. Show love. Give praise when your child is doing well or trying hard.

Parenting can be hard. You can’t help them if you’re not okay. Self-care is very important for you at this time. Contact us to get the help you need. This is when Transformations Counseling Group Child & Family Institute Counseling Therapy can help.
